Lifelong Success

Lifelong Success After Weight Loss SurgeryThe last and most challenging part of Life Change involves adopting essential new habits. This is the key to lifelong success following weight loss surgery.

Weight loss surgery is not a quick fix. It is, however, an effective treatment for morbid obesity. Think of weight loss surgery as a tool to jump start your weight loss and give you the leverage you need to build healthy, lifelong habits. So long as you follow the tips, nutritional advice and life changes we recommend, you’ll lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off… for life.

NJ Bariatrics Support Systems

No baseball player can win the World Series alone. No student can’t earn an A+ without learning the material. Similarly, it will be nearly impossible for you to attain lifelong weight loss without the proper support and knowledge.

Support Group

In addition to the support of your loved ones, the NJ Bariatrics support group should become an ongoing source of support for building new habits and maintaining weight loss. This group, held monthly, serves as an excellent venue for prospective patients, new patients and recovering patients alike to exchange information and renew their motivation. You’ll find it much easier to meet your new dietary challenges when you’re comforted by others who are already achieving success.

Additionally, one of our doctors attends every single meeting in its entirety. Other weight loss centers in New Jersey offer support groups where the surgeons either don’t attend at all or stay for only a few minutes. At NJ Bariatrics, we believe having a medical presence at these meetings is essential to your long term success.

Check our website’s Support Group page for upcoming meeting times and locations.

The Lifestyle Management Class is facilitated by Donna DeMild, LPBLC, Licensed Professional Bariatric Life Coach and 10+ year weight loss surgery veteran. Donna also offers private Life Coaching sessions for those who are interested.

Princeton Fitness & Wellness Center Program

We’ve come together with University Medical Center at Princeton (UMCP) and Princeton Fitness & Wellness Center to combine all of our knowledge, care, and resources to provide a fitness program specifically for the needs of bariatric patients.

As the liaison for NJ Bariatrics, Donna DeMild advocates for your needs as a weight loss surgery patient, assisting in creating an individualized program to help you look at exercise differently, experience different classes, and get hands on experience working with fitness equipment. This 12-week course also includes special cooking classes with a registered dietician from UMCP and visits from different weight loss specialists.

Lifelong Daily Activity

Lifelong Daily Activity for bariatric patientsTo make your weight loss journey a lifelong success, you’ll want to get into the routine of doing some sort of physical activity every day. Choose a variety of exercises you enjoy, such as walking, bicycling, light jogging, swimming, aerobics or even some console fitness games, like as Wii Fit or Just Dance. It’s important to choose activities that you enjoy. It will help you treat your activity habit as playtime rather than a chore.

Exercise provides many health benefits and helps to maximize your weight loss. Regular activity not only burns calories, but it helps to preserve muscle tissue during rapid weight loss.

The recommended amount of exercise for bariatric patients is 30 minutes a day. If your not used to daily physical activity, this might sound like a lot. But you’ll be surprised how easy it can be.

Start small, with just 10 minutes per day (or whatever you’re physically able to do). Then slowly build up, adding another minute or two to your daily activity every few days until you reach the recommended 30 minutes. You might also try to exercise at the same time each day. The steady routine will help to reinforce it as a lifelong habit (just like brushing your teeth).
